EKSTRALIGA AWARDS FOR SGP TOP TWO

FIM Speedway Grand Prix top two Artem Laguta and Bartosz Zmarzlik both picked up awards at Thursday's PGE Ekstraliga Gala.

FIM Speedway Grand Prix top two Artem Laguta and Bartosz Zmarzlik both picked up awards at Thursday's PGE Ekstraliga Gala.

Laguta was named the Foreign Rider of the Year in a season he stormed to an historic world title, taking 59 percent of the fan vote, beating Jason Doyle (16%) and Martin Vaculik (10%).

The night was even more special for the Wroclaw racer, as his parents in Russia congratulated him on his gold-medal triumph in Torun via video link.

Meanwhile, Zmarzlik was crowned Polish Rider of the Year after winning an incredible five SGPs on his way to World Championship silver. He took 54 percent of the vote, seeing off Maciej Janowski (24%) and Janusz Kolodziej (10%).

GP Challenge winner Pawel Przedpelski celebrated his qualification for SGP 2022 by clinching the Surprise of the Year Award. He finished with 25.25 percent of the vote, narrowly beating Great Britain racer Dan Bewley, who polled 24.80 percent.

But the Cumbrian, who scored 15 points for Belle Vue as they reached the SGB Premiership Grand Final tonight, did walk away with Race of the Year for his efforts in heat 14 of Wroclaw’s play-off final showdown away to Lublin.

Wroclaw were unsurprisingly named Team of the Season after lifting their first PGE Ekstraliga title since 2006, but Lublin boss Jacek Ziolkowski was crowned Coach of the Year after leading his side to the silver medal – the joint-best finish in the club’s history.

New FIM Speedway Under-21 world champion Jakub Miskowiak bagged the Junior of the Year prize after a sensational season with Czestochowa, culminating in his U21 title triumph in Pardubice last Friday.

The trophies were named Szczakiels in honour of Poland’s first-ever speedway world champion Jerzy Szczakiel, who passed away in 2020.

Legendary Polish coach Marek Cieslak was honoured with the Golden Szczakiel after retiring from the national side with seven FIM Speedway World Cup gold medals.
