Aussie racer Jason Doyle has sustained a broken rib and punctured lung in a frightening fall during a PGE Ekstraliga match in Torun on Sunday.

The 2017 world champion was reportedly taken wide by Czestochowa star Matej Zagar in heat seven of Lions’ 51-39 win, before hitting Michal Gruchalski and crashing hard.

Doyle was taken to hospital for checks and posted on his Instagram stories feed shortly after getting the bad news.

He said: “Checked into my hotel room for tonight – Hotel Hospital Torun. It’s not so good – broken rib, hole in the lung. Not the way you want to start 2019, is it?”

The news comes as a huge blow to Torun, as well as his British club Swindon and Swedish side Rospiggarna as he faces a likely layoff.

The Newcastle-born racer is due to captain Australia in Monster Energy FIM Speedway of Nations Race Off 2 at Manchester’s National Speedway Stadium next Saturday.

In the event Doyle is unable to ride, Aussie boss Mark Lemon has 2012 world champion Chris Holder in his squad as a potential stand-in to join Max Fricke and Jaimon Lidsey.

We wish Jason a speedy recovery.
