Danish Under-21 star Marcus Birkemose warmed up for his Monster Energy FIM Speedway of Nations debut by sealing the European Under-21 Championship in Gdansk on Monday.
Birkemose, who only celebrated his 17th birthday last Friday, topped the podium on 13 points.
He saw off stiff competition from Polish young gun Jakub Miskowiak, who was second on 12. Sweden’s SON under-21 Alexander Woentin claimed third place on 11, while Germany’s Lukas Fienhage was fourth on 10 – tying on points with Sweden’s Jonathan Grahn.
Czech star Petr Chlupac finished on nine points along with Mateusz Cierniak of Poland and Norick Bloedorn of Germany.
The result continues what has been an astonishing run of form for Birkemose, who sensationally stormed to third place in the final of the Danish Senior Championship at Vojens on September 30.
Birkemose topped the heat scorechart on 13 points, but had to make do with third after being headed by champion Anders Thomsen and runner-up Nicolai Klindt in the final.
He teams up with Thomsen and Leon Madsen in the SON Final at Lublin on Friday and Saturday as the Danes meet hosts Poland, champions Russia, Australia, Sweden, Great Britain and the Czech Republic.
