LINDBACK EYES SWEDISH DOUBLE ACT

Swedish ace Antonio Lindback hopes he can form a dream team with world No.3 Freddie Lindgren at the Monster Energy FIM Speedway of Nations.

Swedish ace Antonio Lindback hopes he can form a dream team with world No.3 Freddie Lindgren at the Monster Energy FIM Speedway of Nations this summer.

Lindback joins his compatriot on the FIM Speedway Grand Prix stage for 2019 after finishing third at the GP Challenge in Landshut last July.

But he also hopes the pair will get the chance to link up in the sport’s world team championship, with Sweden competing in Monster Energy SON Race Off 1 at Landshut on May 4, facing Germany, Poland, Slovenia, Italy, Czech Republic and the Ukraine.

We know each other very well out on the track and Freddie is a good team mate. I know he will do his job, and then it’s up to me to do my job. That’s such a good feeling – that you don’t feel you need to lift the other rider.

The duo were sixth in last season’s Finals, but were just four points off the bronze medal spot in a tight contest in Wroclaw.

Lindback would love the chance to team up with Sweden’s national champion as they aim for a place in the Monster Energy SON Finals at Togliatti on July 20 and 21.

He said: “Freddie and I have been racing for many, many years. Maybe we haven’t been racing in the same club teams, but we meet each other many, many times.

“We know each other very well out on the track and Freddie is a good team mate. I know he will do his job, and then it’s up to me to do my job. That’s such a good feeling – that you don’t feel you need to lift the other rider. If we have two riders on the same level, it’s much better.”

Sweden must find a new under-21 rider for 2019, with last year’s junior Joel Kling too old to be selected.

Questions have been asked about who will follow riders like Lindgren and Lindback on to the World Championship stage with both men in their 30s. But don’t mention the Rio Rocket’s age to the man himself! The 33-year-old gasped: “I’m still like 20 – maximum. Don’t tell me I’m old, dude!”

Lindback admits Sweden’s efforts to produce the next generation are outside his control. And while the under-21 rider must take at least one ride in each Monster Energy SON meeting from this year, Lindback is keen to focus only on his efforts.

“I have no idea who is under-21,” he said. “I’m focused on doing my job – not on the rules and stuff like this.

“It’s not that I don’t care or I’m big-headed. It’s not like that. If I start to focus on whether they’ll change this and that, it will take so much energy from myself. I cannot do that. I need to focus on myself.

“For the moment, it’s a little bit tough. We’ll see what happens in the future. I can’t change it. I can only change my future; what happens with the rest is not down to me.”
